Paying close attention to the Trump/Musk foreign policy

Dear Editor,

Considering Labour’s dark history of carelessly cantering after the US into catastrophe, we need to pay close attention, especially in foreign policy terms, to the chaos the Trump transition team has already created and the sneering and mockery coming from Russia.

Russian UN Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya just stated that nothing the new US administration has to suggest re Ukraine is “interesting to us” – a direct snub and mocking at Trump and America. This was backed up by Sergei Lavrov, the Russian Foreign minister, who had the US intelligence community in meltdown during the last Trump presidency when Trump invited him into the Oval Office and conducted communications without the usual intelligence safeguards in place. This Russian monster blames Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine on NATO, a talking point that has been echoed multiple times by Trump.

Where Labour illegally followed Bush into Iraq, will they now equally catastrophically make wrong decisions in relation to Ukraine in this second Trump/Musk term? Interestingly and memorably, Bush confused the invasion of Ukraine with the invasion of Iraq. Freudian slip extraordinaire!

Under the current uncertainty, one’s heart goes out to Ukraine, its suffering people and Zelensky – holding the line for the whole of Europe while Westminster try and work out a Trump strategy particularly now that Farage is orange-nosing so successfully and, at least for now, has the ear – or rather the cheque book – of the deranged child Musk who seems to be under the impression, thanks to Farage, that the UK is his next playground… Oh 2025

Sincerely,

Amanda Baker
