Following the hair-raising firing of guns at Five Corner, Linden on December 29, a file has been prepared for advice from the Chamber of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Meanwhile, the two men who were nursing gunshot wounds were discharged and released on bail, according to Regional Police Division Commander, Guy Nurse.
Nurse told Stabroek News that Rondel Rodney, a 27-year-old unemployed male from Lot 265 One Mile Wismar Linden, who sustained a gunshot wound to his right leg and Glaston Bristol, a 31-year-old male from Red Crescent Road, Mackenzie, who suffered a chop wound to his head were both discharged from the hospital and were released on station bail. According to Commander Nurse, a file is being prepared to submit to the DPP.
SN previously reported that five individuals suffered gunshot and chop wounds during a violent altercation between two groups at Five Corner Junction in MacKenzie.
The police reported that at least three individuals brandished firearms and fired multiple rounds.
As per the police report, Commander Nurse, Inspector Garnette, Sergeant Jacque, Detective Corporal Peters, and various other police personnel arrived at the scene at 6:30 that morning.
Inquiries revealed that a violent clash erupted, originating from a heated disagreement between two known groups. During this conflict, at least three suspects drew firearms and opened fire, leading to multiple injuries.
Five individuals were injured in the incident:
Rodney sustained a gunshot wound to his right leg;
Tyrone Newton, a 21-year-old male from Lot 70 Half Mile Wismar, was shot in his right foot;
A 17-year-old male from Poker Street, Wismar, suffered a gunshot wound to his left hand;
Brian Johnson, a 25-year-old male from Lot 128 Half Mile Wismar Linden, suffered a stab wound to his right eye;
and Bristol sustained a chop wound to his head and was referred to Georgetown Public Hospital for additional medical care while remaining under police supervision.
According to the police, Bristol is believed to be one of the individuals who fired a weapon during the altercation. When questioned, the injured parties declined to offer any details to the investigating officers. Additionally, two other males – known only as ‘Joby’ and ‘Shaquille Lambert’ (also referred to as Shaq) – are suspected of firing weapons and have yet to be apprehended. Gunshot residue tests were taken from the hands of all injured individuals. Evidence collected from the scene included seven spent 9mm shell casings, two live 9mm rounds, and one warhead.
Witnesses at the scene suggested that the shooting was linked to a series of escalating incidents that began with a confrontation involving a police officer. According to witnesses, the string of events commenced when one vehicle collided with another at the intersection of Five Corner. After a brief verbal exchange, the driver of the damaged vehicle allegedly became enraged and confronted the other driver. The situation reportedly escalated further when the driver of the affected car slapped a police officer who was already at the scene.
Witnesses said that the situation quickly spiralled out of control as the police officer was pushed and struck by the furious driver. Shortly thereafter, gunfire erupted. Some witnesses, choosing to remain unidentified, expressed skepticism about the accuracy of the police’s account of the incident. One witness, who requested anonymity, stated, “The police were already present when the shooting began. This does not match the narrative they are providing.”
