`It’s a work in progress’
Acknowledging that pit latrines still exist in hinterland schools, Amerindian Affairs Minister Pauline Sukhai has stated that steps are being put in place to transform those.
Speaking at her end of year press conference on Wednesday she stated that “Pit latrines still exist in many rural and hinterland remote communities. It’s a work in progress. I wouldn’t say it’s primitive. It’s a form of facility that many rural communities, remote communities, still use. Our country is transforming, and there will be pit latrines in some areas based on the factors that exist”.
Linking them to educational institutions and admitting that they exist she stated that the Ministry is working to address those. She also stated that in many hinterland schools despite some having pit latrines there are sanitary blocks with overhead tanks connected to the nearest point of water.
