GTU seeking elections officer for triennial polls

The Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) is preparing for its Triennial Elections and has advertised for an elections officer.

There will be interest in these elections as Internal wrangling erupted in the GTU last year after a contentious decision to accept a government wages deal.

GTU President Mark Lyte on December 18 told Stabroek News that he had been suspended by the union’s General Council over the controversial deal struck between teachers and the government in August this year.

The second Vice President, Julian Cambridge has also been suspended.

Teachers had struck last year in two separate sections for around 75 days and had been expecting a much better deal than the one that Lyte signed in the end with the Ministry of Education.

On the signing of the deal acrimony erupted in the union.

The GTU notice in Thursday’s Kaieteur News said that that the applicant must possess the following: at least seven years’ experience in a  senior administrative position in the conduct of elections of any type in Guyana;

Have been involved in the conduct of at least five elections in which there was a large number of votes dispersed over a wide area;

Must have knowledge in the electronic administration of elections;

Be able to supervise a number of elections staff in order to realize a free, fair and transparent election.

Applications must reach the GTU no later than Friday, January 24th.
