Elite League Qualifiers

Potaro Strikers Football Club and Pele Football Club have moved a step closer to their goal of promotion to the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Elite League, with narrow wins yesterday at the Uitvlugt Centre Ground, West Coast Demerara.

With spots in the semi-finals of the Qualifiers at stake, Potaro Strikers (Bartica Football Association) needed two second-half goals to record a come from behind win over homeside the Uitvlugt Warriors Football Club.

Akon De Santos’ goal was the difference between Pele FC and Agricola

While the first half was a midfield battle with neither side quite in control of the game, the second half was much more exciting. On resumption of the second half, it only took 9 minutes for Samuel Harvey to put the home team ahead with his well taken strike in the 54th minute, sparking celebrations amongst his teammates and the handful of fans present.

However, those celebrations would be short-lived as Kevin Reddy dragged Potaro level, finding the back of the net in the 62nd minute. With both sides now looking for the goal that would hand them the advantage, it made for an intriguing contest as momentum swung both ways, but in the end, Potaro’s quality and persistence bore fruit with Daniel Gardener smashing home the winning goal in the 84th minute to set up a semi-final encounter against Lake Mainstay Football Club on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, in the second match of the day, Pele Football Club needled Agricola FC to book their semi-final spot. It was a gritty contest as Agricola threatened in offence, but could not convert their chances. Akon De Santos’ 35th minute goal made the difference, helping Pele take a step closer to the pinnacle of club football in Guyana.

Pele will now face Mahaica Determinators in semi-final two slated for Wednesday at a venue to be announced.
