A seven-year-old girl died on Sunday after a gate fell on her at her foster mother’s workplace at No 79 Village, Corriverton.
According to a statement from the police, Kareena Persaud, a seven year-old pupil of Skeldon Primary School, perished when an iron sliding gate fell on her at the Taj Mahal Hotel and Bar.
Kareena, according to the report, was in the company of her aunt and foster mother, Maharanie Ramnarine, called Ranie, at her workplace, the Taj Mahal Hotel and Bar on January 12, 2025. At around 20:30 hrs, Mahranie said that she was closing the doors and preparing to retire to the room that she and Kareena occupied when she heard Kareena calling out to her. Maharanie said when she turned around, she found Kareena lying on the ground under iron sliding gates that weighed approximately 250 lbs.
She was bleeding from head injuries. Maharanie said she shouted for assistance and was helped with the removal of the gates. Kareena was rushed to the Skeldon Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The report further said that the police were notified and visited the hospital, where the body was found on a bed in the Emergency Room, wrapped in a sheet. A detective examined the body and observed a cut on the forehead. The scene was processed and photographed. Several CCTV cameras were identified on the building and will be reviewed by detectives. Statements have also been taken as investigations continue.
According to Maharanie, she has been caring for the child since she was four months old after her biological mother abandoned her. Maharanie also said that she took care of the child with the permission of her 32-year-old father.
