Pigeon infestation forces temporary closure of Charlestown Secondary

Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand responded to a sit-out staged by teachers of the Charlestown Secondary School yesterday who were expressing their frustration at a pigeon infestation affecting the school.

Manickchand told Stabroek News that the school will be closed for the week until the issue is addressed. The education minister added that pigeon infestation has been a problem in different parts of the country and that the ministry even received a report of the cleaner being attacked by the pigeons Chief Education Officer, Saddam Hussain, along with other officials from the Ministry of Education (MoE) held a meeting with the teachers to discuss the issue and arrive at a resolution.

Stabroek News visited the school and observed a number of pigeons in and around the building.

The MoE in a release stated, “The Ministry of Education wishes to advise students, parents, teachers, and other stakeholders that, due to reports of a pigeon infestation at Charlestown Secondary School, classes have been suspended for the remainder of the week to address the issue. The Ministry of Education remains committed to providing a safe and healthy learning environment for all students and teachers.”
