Dear Editor,
I wish to bring to your attention an incident that occurred on Tuesday, January 14, at 2:18 PM. I experienced verbal abuse and physical aggression towards my vehicle after declining to purchase a beverage from a young man at the intersection of Eccles Public Road, en route to the Demerara Harbour Bridge. Despite my repeated signals indicating my lack of interest, he persisted in his approach, resorting to striking the driver’s side window with two water bottles. I requested that he cease hitting my car and expressed my disinterest in the water. However, he continued his aggressive behaviour, even throwing ice at my window and making racially charged remarks, including threats of violence. At that moment, the traffic light changed, allowing me to drive away, though I was left feeling extremely upset.
Interestingly, I had previously observed this individual months ago and thought positively of his efforts to earn a living. However, after this encounter, I believe it is imperative for him to be removed from the streets if he is prone to such abusive behaviour, property damage, and threats of violence against others for not purchasing from him. While he may have been experiencing a difficult day, it is crucial to highlight this incident in case it reflects a broader pattern of behaviour towards women or individuals of specific ethnic backgrounds.
Yours faithfully,
AK
