Yesterday, 23-year-old Marlon Rodrigues appear-ed at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court before Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty charged with robbery under arms.
It is alleged that on Monday, January 13, at Commerce Street, George-town, Rodrigues robbed Roopnarine Curpaul of one iPhone cellphone while armed with a knife.
The prosecution objected to bail citing a number of aggravating factors, including the serious nature of the offence, the penalty it attracts, and the fact that a weapon was used. Further, the complainant, Curpaul, identified the cellphone and Rodrigues as the robber
The court was told that as Rodrigues attempted to flee with the cellphone, the complainant raised an alarm and public-spirited persons gave chase. A detective who was on duty at the time intervened and arrested the suspect. The cellphone was lodged with the police.
Magistrate McGusty asked Curpaul who was present in court if the cellphone in police custody was the only phone he had to which he replied in the affirmative. She then ordered that the phone be returned to him
Rodrigues was denied bail and remanded until his next court appearance scheduled for February 5.
