At least one person has been confirmed dead following two motorcycle accidents at Five Miles, Bartica.

The deceased has been identified as 25-year-old Whitfield Williams, a resident of Kaburi Village, 72 miles from Bartica.

According to reports reaching Stabroek News, the first accident occurred on Sunday morning, followed by another on Monday.

According to his cousin, Stacy Wilie, Williams had travelled to Bartica on Saturday to do some shopping. He had been staying with his partner and their child at Four Miles, Bartica Road.

Wilie told Stabroek News that Williams left his partner’s house on Sunday to visit a friend but got into the accident on his way back. Williams, the eldest of ten siblings, worked as a miner and was known to be a responsible family man.

“He came out to shop and return to the village as he normally does,” Wilie said. She added that he leaves behind a young child and a grieving family.

Meanwhile, a member of the Community Policing Group in Bartica described motorcycle accidents as an escalating crisis in the region, particularly among young people.

“Even the hospital is complaining because a high percentage of accident victims are motorcycle-related,” the CPG member said. “It was only a matter of time before something tragic like this happened.”
