The Ministry of Public Works says maintenance operations were set to begin yesterday on the Essequibo Coast road from Supenaam to Charity.
This is a precursor to the rehabilitation of the road.
A release from the ministry said that as of December 2024, studies have been completed regarding the upgrading of the entire roadway, these works include but are not limited to:
● Widening of the carriageway
● Construction of retaining structures in critical
areas
● Resurfacing the carriageway with an asphaltic
concrete wearing course
● Installing of roadside furniture
It said that this project complements the 179 community roads that are currently being executed by small contractors from Region 2 at a cost $2.5b.
In the interim, four contractors will be executing maintenance works along the entire roadway to ensure the safety of all road users. These works were set to begin yesterday and will include:
● Filling of potholes and or depressions
● Fixing approaches to bridges
