Dear Editor,
I write to suggest that the Government of Guyana consider sending approximately 200 members of the Guyana Defense Force (GDF) to Haiti as part of an international effort to address the ongoing crisis there. Such an action would not only aid Haiti but also strategically position Guyana to strengthen its security posture in the region amid rising geopolitical challenges.
Firstly, deploying troops would demonstrate Guyana’s commitment to regional solidarity and CARICOM’s mission to support Haiti, a fellow member state in desperate need of stability. This action would underscore Guyana’s leadership and willingness to stand with its neighbours, enhancing regional cooperation and trust.
Secondly, participation in this mission would allow the GDF to gain critical experience in international operations, such as conflict resolution, humanitarian assistance, and logistical coordination. These skills would significantly enhance the GDF’s operational readiness, especially given the current threats Guyana faces from Venezuela. The longstanding territorial dispute over the Essequibo region has recently escalated, and improving the GDF’s capabilities is vital for national security.
By aiding Haiti, Guyana would also send a strong message to the global community, showing that it is a responsible nation willing to contribute to international peacekeeping, even as it remains vigilant in defending its sovereignty. Supporting Haiti aligns with our values of peace and cooperation while preparing our defense force for future challenges closer to home.
I urge the government to take this proactive and meaningful step for the benefit of Haiti, the region, and Guyana’s security interests.
Sincerely,
Keith Bernard
