The fire which completely gutted a home at William Street, Kitty, Georgetown, on Thursday afternoon, was caused by a lit gas stove that was left unattended, a source close to the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) disclosed.

The fire left several persons homeless and one hospitalised.

The GFS had received a call at about 15.35 hours on Thursday about a fire at Lot 62 William Street, Kitty. Upon arrival, firefighters were faced with a building fully engulfed in flames and threatening the neighbouring house.

The house accommodated six persons.

Fire Chief Gregory Wickham had informed that the building of origin which housed six persons, was completely destroyed while the neighbouring building to the west suffered severe damage to the top floor. The female occupant, who resided in the building of origin, suffered first degree burns on both arms and was transported to the hospital by emergency medical personnel.
