Dear Editor,
The Trump administration has declared the drug cartels in Mexico terrorist organizations, which now allows for the use of military force in the war against drugs. As the Minister of Home Affairs recently stated in Parliament, Guyana is considered a transit point for narcotics. Given the escalation of the conflict between the U.S. and those who traffic narcotics, as a nation we must reconsider our relationship with source countries for illegal drugs. This means that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation must work closely with the U.S. to ensure that we prevent the use of Guyana as a transit point for drugs. It also means that the Minister of Home Affairs call for improved monitoring of our borders and airspace be supported.
If need be and if recommended by the U.S. we must curtail our diplomatic relations with countries that have been designated narco states. It is time for everyone to help clean up the security situation in the country. If Guyana is found to be enabling the trafficking of narcotics it will place our nation on a list with terrorists that will result in the freezing of Guyana’s oil assets / funds, which are currently being held in the U.S. Let’s work effectively together to ensure that this does not occur. Working closely with the government agencies and the military of the U.S. will prove to be beneficial.
Sincerely,
Mr. Jamil Changlee
