Fifty-year-old Ray Peters appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty on Tuesday charged with possession of narcotics and was jailed for two years after pleading guilty.
The court was told that on Monday, February 3, at Brickdam, Georgetown, Peters was found with five grammes of cocaine in his possession. The prosecution stated that officers on foot patrol in the Stabroek Market area saw the accused put the container with the narcotic on the ground and upon inspecting it they arrested the accused.
When questioned by the magistrate, Peters said that the narcotics were found at the side of a truck and he used it for his back pain. Magistrate McGusty asked Peters whether he knew that the substance was cocaine and if he knew it was illegal to possess it to which Peters replied in the affirmative. He was also asked if anyone forced him to say that he was guilty, and if he did, he would only pay a fine. Peters answered no to both questions.
Magistrate McGusty sentenced Peters to two years’ imprisonment stating that she took his age into account when sentencing him.
