The Guyana Elections Commission has announced that it is now accepting applications for various positions related to the upcoming General and Regional Elections in 2025.
The commission is seeking suitably qualified individuals to fill key positions as presiding officers, assistant presiding officers, poll clerks, ballot/counting clerks, and information clerks.
According to the advertisement, presiding officers will oversee all operations at polling stations, ensuring that the stations are set up properly, including the placement of signs, notices, and ballot boxes. Their duties also include managing the opening of polls, administering oaths, and determining voter eligibility. A diploma or certificate in public management/administration or a trained teacher’s certificate, along with relevant experience, is required. Senior or retired public service officers are encouraged to apply.
Assistant presiding officers, it advised, will assist in managing polling stations, verifying voter identification, ensuring proper ballot handling, and instructing voters on how to cast their ballots. Qualifications include a diploma or certificate in public management/administration, a trained teacher’s certificate, or at least five years of experience in a related field.
The ad said that poll clerks will be responsible for managing the voter queue, checking voter identification, and confirming voter eligibility. A minimum of five passes at GCE o-level or CXC, including English Language and Mathematics, is required. Previous experience in a similar role would be an advantage.
Ballot clerks will monitor the ballot box, ensure proper use of electoral ink, and guide voters through the ballot casting process. The ad said that the required qualifications are similar to those for poll clerks, and prior experience considered an asset.
Information clerks will assist voters in locating their names on the Official List of Electors and direct them to the appropriate polling stations, it stated. In addition to the qualifications required for the prior two positions, computer literacy is required. Experience in a similar role would be beneficial.
