Some of Guyana’s most elite boxers are entering the highly anticipated return of the Caribbean Boxing Championships as globally ranked fighters, following the latest update from the International Boxing Association (IBA).

These rankings come as the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) is in full preparation mode for the championships, set to take place from February 27 to March 3 in St. Lucia. The event marks the first staging of the region’s premier boxing showdown since 2019.

Leading Guyana’s charge are Desmond Amsterdam and Abiola Jackman, both holding impressive world rankings at 29th place in their respective divisions. Amsterdam, a standout in the Light Heavyweight division, is currently the highest-ranked Caribbean boxer in his category. Known for his powerful punches and swift footwork, he has established himself as a dominant force on both regional and international platforms, positioning himself as one of Guyana’s most promising amateur fighters.

Similarly, Abiola Jackman continues to shine in the Women’s Heavyweight division, maintaining her 29th-place standing. Recognized for her aggressive yet disciplined approach in the ring, she utilizes her reach and strength to dictate the pace of her fights, solidifying her reputation as a formidable contender in Caribbean boxing.

Beyond Amsterdam and Jackman, Guyana boasts several other world-ranked fighters. Alesha Jackman, the younger sister of Abiola, holds the 62nd position in the Light Welterweight division. Olympian Keevin Allicock, a key name in Guyanese boxing, ranks 36th in the Featherweight division, just behind Trinidad and Tobago’s Anthony Joseph (ranked 35th). Meanwhile, Jamal Eastman is placed 50th in the Lightweight division, proving his capability to compete among the sport’s finest. Additionally, light welterweight boxer Colin Lewis is ranked 83rd, further reinforcing Guyana’s presence in the IBA world rankings.

President of the GBA, Steve Ninvalle, expressed immense pride in the country’s growing recognition in the boxing world. He reaffirmed the association’s commitment to nurturing local talent and propelling them to greater heights on the global stage.

“We are proud of what our boxers have achieved so far. This is just the beginning. The GBA will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that more Guyanese fighters break into the world rankings and climb even higher,” Ninvalle stated.

He also emphasized the importance of cultivating young talent to sustain Guyana’s dominance in the sport for years to come.
