Authorities at East Ruimveldt Secondary School have confirmed that they are investigating two fights that broke out in and around the compound on Tuesday afternoon. Sources close to the school and neighbours confirmed that the altercations took place after 3 pm, with one fight involving two girls and the other involving a boy and a girl.
Eyewitnesses revealed that the disputes escalated quickly, leading to parental involvement.
However, teachers who spoke with Stabroek News under the condition of anonymity, saying, “remember teachers not supposed to speak to the press”, expressed frustration over what they described as a “recurring issue”. According to them, fights at the school are a regular occurrence, particularly on Fridays, and the usual response has been suspensions rather than long-term resolutions.
Some teachers also mentioned that in many instances, the preliminary stages of these fights begin online. “It’s Mash time, and most times the fights start on social media, where students argue and build tension before it escalates to fights in school. This has been happening for years,” one teacher said.
The school was closed yesterday.
Some neighbours believe the closure is directly related to the recent fights, while others speculate that it might be connected to preparations for the upcoming Mashramani celebrations.
Efforts to contact the Minister of Education for a comment have proven futile.
