Police Officer and calypsonian Quincy “Ego” Lacon has his eyes set on becoming the 2025 Calypso Monarch and he believes he can do it with his song “Trade Guyana”.
Ego said that “Trade Guyana” has been garnering a lot of attention and is a good song.
“‘Trade Guyana’ came as a blessing to my career,” Ego said. “I say that because I linked up with the folks from Joey2cool Production Studio; that’s Mr Joel Brown and Miss Jillian Moore, and we made an amazing piece of art with ‘Trade Guyana’.

“Hearing the name ‘Trade Guyana’ you might think I’m telling you to trade Guyana. However, when you hear the actual lyrics of the song, which is viral at the moment, you’ll know I’m sending a positive message saying not to trade Guyana.”
Ego said that “Trade Guyana” wasn’t the song he intended to sing this year but circumstances led to “Trade Guyana” and he believes it’s a far better song than the one he had originally. “The studio I was with before – everyone knows Ssignal Productions – there was some issues there and ‘Trade Guyana’ was birthed. I’m happy it was birthed.
I’m happy for the reaction from the world, because not only Guyana speak about it, I’ve gotten messages from people from the Caribbean and America messaging myself and manager saying good things about the song,” he said.
When asked about his introduction to calypso, Ego recalled that ever since he was a teenager he would go to the calypso competitions from time to time at the National Park and Thirst Park as well as always following different calypsonians local and abroad. Having had success in other genres – R&B, pop, reggae, soca and chutney – he wanted to conquer calypso and placed fourth in his first outing in 2020.
Ego stated that he is inspired by a lot of other calypsonians, “people like Crow Crow, Singing Sandra and at home here Bill Rogers, Don Edwards, those guys inspire me”.
Ego described his music as inspiring and jovial. “It’s good music man. It’s music for every age group. My lyrics are always clean and relatable and always tell a story,” he said.
Asked how he balances his duties as an officer as well as being a musician, Ego said, “it has been somewhat challenging. It has its ups and downs but I’ve managed to handle it gracefully. My work is always well done and my supervisors never have to complain about me being tardy, and of course my music is always presented well.”
Ego went on to say that he feels confident about the upcoming finals. “There’s only one Ego. I’m not shaken or bothered. My style is what makes me stand out and the song ‘Trade Guyana’ stands out as you know,” he said.
“I want to give thanks to the Almighty, the Guyana Police Force, Jillian, Joel Brown, as well as Kobe Rogers, who’s working extremely hard to make ‘Trade Guyana’ a success.”
The Calypso Monarch final takes place at Main Street on February 20th 2025.
