Ariel Masters, Regal Legends crowned softball league Republic Cup T20 champs

Ariel Masters and Regal Legends were crowned champions in their respective categories when the Georgetown Softball Cricket League Republic Cup T20 tournament concluded yesterday at Police Sports Club, Eve Leary.

Ariel Masters beat Super Strikers by 91 runs to win the Over-40 final. Ariel Masters batted first and posted a healthy 230-4.

Chien Gittens led with a robust 78 which included six fours and five sixes. He added 63 for the second wicket with opener Samuel Kingston following the loss of fellow opener A Ali for 19. Kingston struck six fours and three sixes before he was dismissed for a steady 55. The right-handed Gittens and the in-form Richard Latif came together and steadied the innings well as they put on an enterprising 101 for the fourth wicket. Latif hit three fours and five sixes in an even half century.

Super Strikers were dismissed for 139 in 18 overs in reply. They never really recovered after being reduced to 47-3. L Beharry scored 30, while Keith Fraser made 23 and S Boodram 17. S Haniff took 2-20 and M Arjune 2-41.

Regal Legends beat Parika Legends by four wickets to win the over-50 final.

Parika Legends took the first turn in the middle and were bowled out for 111 in 20 overs. Ramo Malone made 47, while Kabesh Persaud scored 13. The duo added 53 for the sixth wicket following the loss of some quick wickets up front. Oswald Chandla assisted with 13 as Unnis Yusuf picked up 4-17, Stanley Mohabir 2-18 and Surujdeo Ramdeen 2-25.

Regal Legends responded with 112-6. Nandram Samlall hit an unbeaten 30 while Rudolph Baker made 20. The pair put on 34 for the fourth wicket to stabilize the chase after some early nervous moments. Devanand Kannan had 2-13, Malone 2-33 and Kabesh Persaud 2-33.

The winning teams collected a trophy and $200,000 each, while the runners-up took home a trophy and $50,000 each.

Gittens took the man of the match prize in the Over 40 division and Yusuf pocketed the player of the match accolade in the Over 50 category.
