Edghill and Britton to represent Guyana at 2025 Pan American Table Tennis Cup

Guyana’s top table tennis stars, Chelsea Edghill and Shemar Britton, are set to compete at the prestigious 2025 Pan American Table Tennis Cup, which serves as the ITTF Continental Cup for the Americas. The tournament, powered by J.P. Morgan, will be held at the 888 Table Tennis Center in Burlingame, California, from February 18, 2025.

With $20,000 in prize money and vital ITTF ranking points at stake, the event will bring together the best players from North, Central, South America, and the Caribbean. Competitors who advance to the semifinals in the Men’s and Women’s Singles will also secure a spot in the 2025 ITTF Singles World Cup in Macau, China.

Both Edghill and Britton will use this championship as a stepping stone toward international ranking improvements and preparation for the next Olympic quadrennial cycle.   Britton, who previously held a world ranking of 245 and is now ranked 479, is a multi-time Caribbean medalist at both the junior and senior levels. In recent performances, he has demonstrated his potential by defeating top-tier players at the Pan-American level. He will be competing against a strong lineup of opponents, including players from Canada, the USA, Haiti, Mexico, Brazil, Paraguay, Chile, Guatemala, and Jamaica.

Edghill, Guyana’s reigning national women’s table tennis champion, has previously held a world ranking of 265 and is currently ranked 444. She has been preparing for this challenge by training with Cuba’s national team in Havana. After recovering from injuries that hampered her training and performance throughout 2023 and 2024, she is eager to assess her current form against competitors from the USA, Guatemala, and Chile in the preliminary round.

The tournament will feature some of the best players in the region, including U.S. Olympians Kanak Jha, Lily Zhang, and Amy Wang. Brazilian Olympian Bruna Takahashi, Ecuadorean Olympian Alberto Miño, and Canadian Olympian Edward Ly will also be among the elite competitors. Several other top-ranked global stars are expected to make their mark at the event.

Edghill arrived in San Francisco on February 15, while Britton followed on February 16. With the competition set to begin, both athletes will look to make their mark, gain crucial ITTF ranking points, and secure a potential spot in the 2025 ITTF World Cup.
