The Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPLF) launched its 2025 competition calendar in impressive fashion on Sunday with the Novices and Juniors Championship at the Saint Stanislaus College Auditorium. The event saw 12 lifters (10 men and two women) put their strength to the test in a thrilling display of raw power and determination.
While the men showcased their dominance in various weight classes, the female competitors stole the spotlight, setting eight new national records across all three lifts: squat, bench press, and deadlift as well as their total lifts.
Emerging as the standout athletes of the competition, Matthew Moore claimed the Best Lifter Trophy in the Juniors Classic category, while Joshua John took home the **Novice Classic Best Lifter Trophy, both sponsored by Trophy Stall.

The competition’s title sponsor, Fitness Express, also

rewarded top performers, including the record-breaking female lifters and lone equipped athlete, Kamal Gurdin with special gift vouchers.
Before the first lift of the day, GAPLF President Franklin Wilson expressed gratitude to the athletes, officials, and sponsors for their commitment to the sport.
“I want to thank you for your dedication to training and preparing for this competition. Your discipline and hard work are commendable, and you are all winners,” Wilson stated. “The sport continues to grow, and we remain grateful to all who contribute to its development.”
Wilson also recognized the contributions of former GAPLF presidents Peter Green, Ed Caesar, and Gordon Spencer, the latter of whom, as an accredited Category II referee, officiated at the event.
With the competition season now underway, the GAPLF’s next major event will be its Annual General Meeting and Elections, with a date to be announced in the coming weeks.
