The girl who was charged with causing the dormitory fire in Mahdia in 2023 that claimed 20 lives has been committed to stand trial.
She was committed to stand trial on February 14 by Magistrate Sunil Scarce after having been charged with 20 counts of murder,
The charge read that on the 21st of May, 2023 at Mahdia she murdered Nicholeen Robinson, Martha D’Andrade, Shorline Bellarmine, Eulanda Carter, Adonijah Jerome, Subrina John, Cleoma Simon, Tracil Thomas, Andrea Roberts, Lisa Roberts, Rita Jeffery, Loreen Evans, Delicia Edwards, Belnisa Evans, Lorita Williams, Mary D’Andrade, Omefa Edwin, Natalie Bellarmine and Arianna Edwards.
In May 2023 the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions had advised that charges be instituted against the teenager.
At the time of the fire, which started at approximately 10.50 pm ,56 girls were in the dormitory.
Acting Fire Chief Dwayne Scotland had said that firefighters from the Mahdia Fire Station were summoned to the scene at around 11.15 pm on Sunday, but the four-minute drive found the building completely engulfed in flames.
