2025 Concacaf Women’s Under-20 Championship
In a tightly contested match at the 2025 Concacaf Women’s Under-20 Championship Qualifiers, the Guyana Under-20 women’s football team played to a 0-0 draw against Belize yesterday in Antigua and Barbuda.
The Group A encounter, held at the ABFA Technical Center, saw both teams creating opportunities but ultimately failing to convert them into goals. This result places Guyana in a challenging position as they aim to advance in the tournament.
Compounding their on-field challenges, the Guyana squad faced administrative hurdles prior to the match.
Five key players were deemed ineligible to compete due to the absence of Guyanese passports, a requirement for participation in the tournament. This development forced the coaching staff to make last-minute adjustments to the lineup, potentially impacting team cohesion and performance. Those players who are ineligible to compete are Olivia Watt, Kaela Medas, Shareina Langevine, Sarah DaSilva, and Myanna Fernandes.
The Guyana Football Federation (GFF) has expressed its commitment to resolving these documentation issues promptly. The GFF also emphasized the importance of thorough administrative preparations to prevent similar situations in future international engagements.
Guyana is drawn in Group A of the competition, pitting them against Belize, Haiti and the hosts, Antigua and Barbuda. The Guyanese girls’ next fixture will see them taking on the latter on Sunday from 3 pm at the same venue. They will then wrap up the Group phase of the campaign with a clash against Haiti on Tuesday. They will need wins to stand a chance of progression in the competition.
