Following the conclusion of Mashramani celebrations on Sunday, the Mayor and City Council engaged a private contractor and received additional support from the Ministry of Public Works to facilitate a swift cleanup.

The celebrations, which saw thousands of revellers participating in parades, picnics, and other festivities, left significant amounts of garbage along key areas from Carmichael Street to Vlissengen Road and leading into the National Park. By yesterday morning, waste was visibly scattered along these routes, but cleanup efforts were already underway.

Speaking to Stabroek News, Georgetown Mayor Alfred Mentore disclosed that the council made the decision to outsource the cleanup operation to a private contractor, Mario Gurshaw, to expedite the process.

“We outsourced to a contractor called Mario Gurshaw. We generated funds from these activities, so we decided at the level of the council to do that,” Mentore stated. He noted that given the scale of the festivities, it would have taken the council’s internal resources a maximum of two days to complete the cleanup. However, to ensure a swift return to normalcy ahead of the work week, the Ministry of Public Works also stepped in to assist in cleaning areas surrounding Camp Ayanganna and other key locations.

Mentore assured the public that all affected areas would be cleared promptly, with municipal teams and contractors working around the clock to restore order.
