Police have launched an investigation into a road fatality that occurred at approximately 00:10 hrs yesterday on the public road at Wallers Delight, West Coast Demerara.

A police press release said that the incident involved motorcar PVV 2663, driven by Ashley Raymond, 43, of Uitvlugt, and Abdool Sharaf Rahim, 40, of Section B, Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara.

According to the release, Rahim’s wife, Sonia Ramlochan, 32, informed investigators that her husband had been attempting to retrieve his car keys from her, but she refused to hand them over due to his intoxicated state. This reportedly led to an argument and Rahim walked across the road from south to north and stood in the vehicle’s path with his hands raised in the air.

The area was poorly lit, the release said, adding that Raymond claimed that because of how close she was, she was unable to avoid the collision. The right front side of her vehicle struck Rahim, propelling him onto the windscreen before he rolled off the bonnet and landed on the roadway, the release  stated.

Emergency medical personnel transported Rahim to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where he was examined by a doctor and pronounced dead on arrival, it added. His body has since been taken to Ezekiel Funeral Home, pending a post-mortem examination.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
