GCA/NBS 2nd Division 40-Overs
The Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA)/NBS 2nd Division 40-overs competition continued on Sunday with Transport Sports Club (TSC) and Muslim Youth Organisation (MYO) notching up wins via contrasting routes.
Transport Sports Club secured a commanding 44-run victory over Demerara Cricket Club (DCC), successfully defending a modest total on their home ground.
Batting first, Transport struggled to find momentum, eventually being dismissed for 138 in 29.2 overs. Several batsmen managed to get starts but failed to capitalize. Shamar Apple led the charge at the top of the order with a quick-fire 23 off 15 balls, including one four and two sixes. Shiloh Adams contributed 24, while Jermain Dewsbury and Shaun Massiah both added 20 runs to the total.
DCC’s bowling attack was spearheaded by Ricardo Percival, who picked up 3 for 44 in his eight-over spell. Kaylon Callender provided excellent support with 3 for 11 from four overs, while Jonathan Mentore chipped in with 2 for 13. Wavell Allen also claimed a wicket as DCC restricted the hosts to what seemed like a chaseable target.
However, Transport’s bowlers turned the tables in dramatic fashion, dismantling DCC’s batting lineup and bundling them out for 94 inside 30 overs. Spinner Stephon Sankar delivered a match-winning performance, taking 4 for 16 in his seven-over spell to wreck the visitors’ chase. Fellow spinner Reyaz Latif offered strong support, claiming 3 for 16 in his eight overs. Massiah and John Persaud chipped in with a wicket each to seal the victory.
DCC’s batting effort lacked stability, with only Alphius Bookie (16), Mentore (14), and Ezekiel Wilson (14) managing to put up some resistance. However, their efforts were in vain as the relentless spin attack from Transport proved too much to handle.
MYO triumph over Bel Air Rubis
MYO delivered a dominant performance against Bel Air Rubis at the QC Ground, securing a 21-run victory after an explosive batting display by Richard Latiff. Winning the toss and electing to bat first, MYO posted an imposing 315 for 5 from their allotted 40 overs, with Latiff producing a breathtaking unbeaten 213. His innings, decorated with 19 fours and 18 sixes from just 122 balls, left Bel Air’s bowlers with little respite. Marlon Boel provided valuable support with 45 off 48 balls, including eight boundaries, as MYO set a daunting target of 316 for victory.
Bel Air’s bowlers struggled to contain the onslaught, with Ferron Kadir emerging as the most successful bowler, taking 2 for 35 from his six overs. However, the rest of the bowling attack had no answers to Latiff’s destructive batting display.
In response, Bel Air Rubis mounted a spirited chase, led by Mahendra Singh, who struck a well-composed 69 from 54 balls, laced with nine fours and two sixes. Anil Singh also contributed a brisk 53 off 34 balls, hitting six fours and two sixes, while Andy Lall played a late cameo, smashing 40 from just 16 deliveries, including three fours and three sixes, to add some respectability to the total.
Despite their best efforts, Bel Air’s chase fell short, with MYO’s bowlers stepping up to the task. Chien Gittens led the attack with 4 for 59 from his eight overs, while Latiff returned with the ball to claim 2 for 44, capping off a sensational all-round performance.
The competition is slated to continue over the coming weekend with the GCA to release the next set of fixtures.
