In a  move to bolster its capabilities in tackling the growing threat of cybercrime, the Guyana Police Force’s (GPF) Criminal Investigation Department (CID) commenced an intensive training programme yesterday at the Officers’ Training Centre, Camp Road.

The two-week training programme, spearheaded by Officer-in-Charge of the Cyber Crime Unit, Assistant Superintendent Jhared Khoulen, will include expertise from the National Data Manage-ment Authority, as well as specialists from Trinidad and Tobago.

Yesterday’s opening ceremony was attended by Head of the Major Crimes Unit, Senior Superinten-dent Mitchell Caesar, and Director of the GPF Academy, Woman Senior Superintendent Sonia Herbert, alongside other Heads of Department within the CID, a release from the police said.

Approximately 25 members of the Criminal Investigation Department, drawn from the various regional Police divisions, are set to benefit from the two-week course focused on digital forensics and cybercrime investigation.

The primary aim of the course is to equip participants with the requisite investigative skills, enabling them to understand and apply procedures in cybercrime investigations effectively. The course objectives include:

** Orienting participants in understanding cybercrime and its legal frameworks.

** Assisting participants in acquiring skills and knowledge in dealing with procedures involving digital evidence collection and forensic techniques.

** Articulating informed opinions about crime scene analysis, investigative response, digital investigation procedures, and case analysis.

** Examining real-world cybercrime cases to apply investigation techniques and problem-solving strategies.

The release said that the  training underscores the GPF’s commitment to staying ahead of technological advancements in crime and ensuring that members, particularly ranks of the CID, are well-prepared to address the challenges posed by cyber criminals and to create a safer digital environment for all citizens.
