Guyana recorded their second win in the women’s divisions of the Pan American Junior Hockey Challenge, overcoming hosts Barbados by a 1-0 score-line, yesterday at the Sir Garfield Sobers Complex in Wildey.
It was a commendable performance from the Guyanese against the undefeated powerhouse, as the score was locked at 1-1 for the majority of the contest.
Following a scoreless first period, the Brazilians secured the lead in the form of Luigi Lunardi, who netted from a penalty corner in the 20th minute.
However, the lead proved to be short-lived as the Guyanese responded via Yonnick Norton, who etched his name on the score-sheet three minutes later. No other conversion was recorded for the period. Similarly, the score remained unaltered as the third quarter failed to produce a conversion. Nonetheless, Matheus Nascimento would record the decider as he breached the rearguard for the Guyanese in the 54th minute. With the loss, Guyana, which now sports a record of one win and three defeats, drops to fifth place and remains on three points. They will conclude their group stage campaign tomorrow against Barbados.
Meanwhile, the women’s team will conclude their group stage campaign against Trinidad and Tobago today at the same venue.
