A well-placed source close to the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) and its Referee Department has revealed that the GFF owes referees more than $4 million in outstanding fees.
These dues reportedly stem from various Regional Member Association (RMA) Leagues and select games from the Elite League, sparking significant discontent among the officiating community.
The tension between the GFF and the referees reached a boiling point on the same day that Season 7 of the Elite League was set to kick off (March 9). According to the source, referees threatened to strike, casting a shadow over the opening fixtures of the high-profile competition.
However, in a last-minute turn of events, it seems that the referees were persuaded to proceed with their duties, and the opening matches of the season were officiated as planned. Despite the temporary resolution, the underlying issue of unpaid fees remains unresolved, with ongoing frustration among officials.
Stabroek Sports reached out to the GFF’s Public Relations department for comment on the matter but there was no response.
