Crystoff Amsterdam, a 26-year-old gold miner from La Retraite, West Bank Demerara, and Quacy Nero, a 27-year-old gold miner from LBI, East Coast Demerara, were yesterday charged with possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.

The two appeared before Magistrate Teriq Mohamed at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court, where the charge was read to them. They both pleaded not guilty and were remanded to prison. The case was adjourned to April 28, 2025, for continuation.
On Sunday afternoon, police ranks on patrol duty at Tamakay Backdam, Middle Mazaruni River, acted on information received and proceeded to a camp occupied by Nero and Amsterdam.
Upon arrival, a police statement stated that officers observed Amsterdam with a black haversack. A search of the bag revealed 207 transparent parcels containing a quantity of white substance suspected to be cocaine.
Amsterdam was informed of the offence, cautioned, and arrested. In response, he allegedly stated: “Officer, I found the bag in the camp when we were cleaning up.”
Both men were arrested and taken to the Enachu Police Station, where the suspected narcotics were weighed and amounted to 186 grams.
