Venezuelan woman charged with attempted murder of man at Mango Landing

A Venezuelan national, Veronica Rondon Alfaro of San Felix/El Dorado, Venezuela, was yesterday charged with attempted murder.

She appeared virtually before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh at the Kamarang Magistrate’s Court.

She was not required to plead to the indictable charge and was remanded to prison. The case was adjourned to June 17, 2025, for continuation.

Alfaro was arrested on March 13 for the attempted murder of 36-year-old businessman Frederick Junior Stanford of Golden Grove, East Coast Demerara, on March 9 at Mango Landing, Region 7.

Police investigations revealed that the two had been in an intimate relationship for the past year. On the night of the incident, Alfaro left the businessman’s establishment and went to a nearby shop owned by a 30-year-old Venezuelan national, where she consumed alcohol. She later returned to Stanford’s business, which was closed, and knocked on the door. When he told her to “go back where you went,” she allegedly forced her way inside with a one-litre Coca-Cola bottle containing gasoline, which she threw on him.

A scuffle ensued, causing some of the gasoline to spill onto her. She then lit a lighter, setting both of them on fire. Public-spirited citizens intervened and transported them to the Eteringbang Police Station. They were later medevacked to Georgetown via a Guyana Defence Force aircraft for medical treatment.
