Chief Election Officer disavows statement by Legal Officer

-‘potential to create confusion and misrepresentation’

Chief Election Officer, Vishnu Persaud, yesterday issued a strongly-worded disavowal of a submission by the Guyana Elections Commission’s Legal Officer made during legal proceedings.

In a statement yesterday, the CEO stated that he was “compelled” to denounce the recent submission made by the Legal Officer of the Guyana Elections Commission during legal proceedings in which he was a respondent in an extant court matter, as published on Thursday, March 20, in a News Source article titled “GECOM’s Counsel sees need for separate lists and ballot paper for General and Regional Elections.”

While acknowledging that the pronouncements were made by the Legal Officer who purportedly was representing him, Persaud stressed that the submissions of the Legal Officer did not represent instructions that were given to him.
