Tulsie Ramprashad from Parika, East Bank Essequibo, who was arrested on 28th October 2023 at the Citizens Bank automated teller machine (ATM) outlet at OMG on Sheriff Street and Campbell Avenue, Georgetown, with four blank cards, was yesterday sentenced to two years imprisonment in absentia.
The police said in a release yesterday that on 1st November 2023, Ramprashad was charged with the possession of bank cards with magnetic strips contrary to the Cyber Crime Act. He appeared before Chief Magistrate (ag) Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court 1, where the charge was read to him. He pleaded not guilty and was remanded.
On 1st January 2024, the release said that he was granted bail in the sum of $300,000 and the matter was transferred to the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court 6 for trial.
Yesterday, Magistrate Orinthia Schmidt who presides at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court 6, found him guilty for the offence of possession of illegal devices. He was sentenced in absentia to two years imprisonment together with a fine of $800,000.
