Private Sector Commission oversimplified labour situation – PNCR/APNU

The People’s National Congress Reform/A Partnership for National Unity (PNCR/APNU) has expressed the view that the Private Sector Commission (PSC) may be guilty of “oversimplification” in its understanding of the forces driving unemployment in Guyana.

In a release yesterday, the PNCR/APNU coalition referred to a recent statement by the PSC that unemployment in Guyana is “largely voluntary.” According to the PSC, no one should be without a job as jobs are available for all Guyanese, as there is an ongoing shortage of both skilled and unskilled labour.

In response to the PSC’s assertion, the release pointed out that the mere presence of protracted vacancies or job openings does not imply the absence of persons who are willing to or searching for work, noting that “To conclude would be an oversimplification of the several challenges that characterise Guyana’s labour market.”
