Isaiah Jones bags hatrick

The Guyana National Men’s Football Team, the Golden Jaguars, etched their names in history with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Guatemala in the first leg of their Gold Cup Preliminary fixture at Wildey Park, Barbados. Despite playing their ‘home game’ in Barbados, Guyana, who had not defeated Guatemala in two previous encounters, ground out a gritty win.

Guatemala controlled much of the match, dominating possession with 63% and registering 15 shots compared to Guyana’s seven. However, it was the Golden Jaguars who made their chances count, led by an outstanding hat-trick from Isaiah Jones.

Jones opened the scoring in the 9th minute, finishing a well-placed left-footed shot into the bottom left corner after a precise through ball from Nathan Moriah-Welsh. Guatemala responded in the 29th minute when José Martínez latched onto a free kick and slotted past the Guyanese goalkeeper to level the score.
