Ranks from the Anti-Terrorism Unit of the Guyana Police Force arrested a man during mobile patrol yesterday following a loud explosion that sounded like a gunshot in the vicinity of Leopold and Cross streets, Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown.
According to a police press release, at about 01:30 hrs yesterday, a cadet officer and a team of policemen from the Anti-Terrorism Unit were on mobile patrol duties and whilst in the vicinity of Leopold and Cross streets, they heard a loud explosion that sounded like a gunshot.
They saw a man dressed in long blue jeans and a coloured hoodie, run with what appeared to be a firearm in his hand into a fenced yard, the release said. They gave chase and apprehended him.

The release said the police found a 9mm Beretta pistol in his pants waist. The suspect was asked if he was the holder of a valid firearm license and he said ‘no’, it added. He was told of the offence committed and cautioned but he remained silent. The suspect was then arrested, but refused to give his name and other details, the release stated.
The suspect along with the firearm (and a magazine with ten matching rounds of 9mm ammunition) was escorted to Ruimveldt Police Station where the firearm was dusted for fingerprints by crime scene ranks, the police said.
The suspect was later taken to the Criminal Investigation Department Headquarters where his hands were swabbed for gunpowder residue. He was later placed in custody pending further investigation, the release said.
