Many people involved in the skilled trades in Guyana are untrained and not always aware of safety requirements within the trade they practice.
Even though several training institutions exist in the country which confer Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) certification, “there are still too many who operate… who have not one iota about the certification requirements,” a professional engineer has observed.
Speaking with Stabroek News in an invited comment on Saturday, the seasoned contractor, who prefers anonymity, shared that in the domain of electrical installation, practitioners need to be certified and their work verified before being commissioned. “In other skill trades, no certification is requested and no one verifies the authenticity of a job done. This needs to be revisited,” he posited.
