Rising Rounds
In the heart of Rose Hall, East Berbice, a young fighter laces up his gloves each day with the dream of making it to the international boxing stage. Joshua Thambaran, just 18 years old, is already one of Guyana’s most promising prospects in the amateur flyweight division (52kg). A versatile fighter, he switches seamlessly between orthodox and southpaw stances, a skill that makes him unpredictable in the ring. But before he can achieve his goal of fighting on the world stage, Thambaran must first navigate a path riddled with obstacles outside of the ring, a different type of opponent.
Boxing runs deep in his blood. Introduced to the sport at just seven years old, Joshua was surrounded by the influence of his uncles, including Jamal Eastman, and a long line of boxing relatives. Now, under the guidance of coach Gregory ‘Chassis’ Cort at the Rose Hall Town Jammers gym, he is shaping himself into a formidable fighter. His rigorous training schedule — twice daily sessions from Monday to Friday, with Sunday mornings reserved for additional work — reflects the discipline and determination needed to succeed.
