The guardians of 11 girls who died in the Mahdia dormitory fire of 2023 are suing the State of Guyana for over $400 million each in damages, citing state negligence and violations of fundamental human rights.
Eleven of the girls were from the village of Mico-bie in Region 8. According to case files, they were residing at the Mahdia Secondary School dormitory, which was under the care and custody of the state at the time of the tragedy on May 21st.
The guardians are Cornel Edwards the father of Delecia Edwards and Arianna Edwards, Glen Thomas the mother of Cleoma Simon, Tinekha Prince the mother of Lorita Williams, Suelyn Roberts also known as Shelyn Robers the mother of Nicholeen Robinson, Cinty Prince the mother of Andrea Roberts, Monica Robers the mother of Lisa Roberts, Leandra Bellarmine is the grandmother of Shorlin Bellarmine and was her guardian at the time of her death, Joycelyn Thomas is the mother of Thracial Thomas, Celis Daniels is the mother of Sherana Daniels and Deborah Bellarmine is the mother of Natalie Bellarmine.
