Boy injured in Charlestown shootout dies

Jeremiah Gustave who was shot in the head at his mother’s food stand on July 9, 2024 on Charles Street, Charlestown died last evening at his home.

According to a relative, Jeremiah turned seven in January of this year and was discharged from the Georgetown Public Hospital. He died yesterday at around 3.15 pm. The relative told the Sunday Stabroek  that the child had stopped breathing and was later pronounced dead. His body is currently at the hospital morgue.

On the day in question, Gustave was sitting on a chair in front of his mother’s food stall at Lot 11 Charles Street, Charlestown.

The accused and another man allegedly had a misunderstanding that escalated into gunfire which resulted in the minor sustaining a gunshot wound to the head. The six-year-old was immediately picked up in an unconscious state and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital. He was admitted in a critical condition to the Intensive Care Unit and placed on life support.

Gustave endured many health challenges in the aftermath of the shooting.

Giving an update on her son last year,  Keisha Gustave told this newspaper that Jeremiah had begun bleeding internally. She said the doctors conducted several tests to ascertain the cause of the new development. According to the mother, prior to this setback, there had been tentative talk about discharging her son from the hospital, but this required the acquisition of a suction machine
