City sides Western Tigers and the Guyana Defence Force, led by a double strike each from Edmonson Gomes and Jerome Richardson, easily disposed of West Demerara’s Pouderoyen and Uitvlugt by 3-1 margins respectively as the annual Mayor’s Cup football tournament kicked off on Sunday with a double header at the Tucville Playfield.
In the feature clash which began at a moderate pace but gained momentum, Western Tigers established an early lead when Gomes scored in the second minute of play.
Western Tigers stretched their lead on the stroke of halftime when Paul Giles found the back of the net.
Gomes then completed his double scoring some 13 minutes into the second half.
Pouderoyen’s consolation goal was scored by Clement Browne in the 65th minute.
In the GDF/Uitvlugt encounter, the army marksmen were bang on target with Jerome finding the net in the 16th and 30th minutes to give his team a comfortable cushion at halftime.
Uitvlugt, however, were not undaunted and made amends for an earlier miss by converting in the 46th minute through Sherwin Lanferman.
But Sheik Kamal, the former Under-19 national recently acquired through the January transfer window period from Pele, added to the army’s tally in the 59th minute.
The competition continues tomorrow with another double header at the same venue.
