Relatives of a Lusignan fisherman are grieving his death after he was stabbed in the neck during an altercation with another male near a liquor store on Sunday. The man has since been arrested by the police.
Madan Kumar Sahadeo, 50, of Lot 333 Lusignan west, East Coast Demerara (ECD) was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
According to the police, at about 17:30 hrs on Sunday, Sahadeo was at a liquor restaurant at Lusignan when he became involved in an argument with another man who then stabbed him to the neck.
Shanta Raghubir, Sahadeo’s sister, said she and other relatives were at a wedding in Unity, Mahaica, ECD when she received a call from a relative that her brother was “murdered” by a man.
“It was like around 5:50 when we get the news and we travelled from Unity to the bar and saw him laying face down on a bridge opposite the shop; with his throat punctured in a pool of blood,” Raghubir said.
Raghubir added that her brother’s body was stiff by the time they got there, an indication that he had been dead for some time.
Meanwhile, Sahadeo’s mother Dularie said that about 5 pm a friend of her son’s went to the house and he left with him without saying where he was going.
Dularie said it must have been about 5.30 pm that she received a call from her grandson, who was at the bar, notifying her that Sahadeo had been killed by a man he had been in an argument with.
“I was home when I get the call. I did not go to the wedding because I am unable to walk. Oh God mih son he dead and left mih now and nobody nah know what happen,” Dularie lamented.
“Mih quarrel with um and tell he stop drink, but he don’t listen to me,” the mother cried.
The liquor store owner Seeta Rukhdeo of the Sapodilla Bar said she and her husband were inside the shop preparing “cutters” to serve to a group of men when she heard two men arguing over how much money they each made as fishermen.
Rukhdeo said the men then took their argument outside and soon after a man, who she identified as a relative of one of the men, notified her that his “uncle” had been stabbed by a man who escaped on foot.
Sahadeo’s body is currently at Jerrick’s Funeral Home and is scheduled to be cremated tomorrow.
A post-mortem examination done by Government Pathologist Dr Nehaul Singh yesterday revealed that Sahadeo died from an incised wound to the neck.
The suspect is now in police custody assisting with the investigation.
