A businessman was yesterday afternoon shot twice to his left leg at High Street, Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown when he attempted to intervene in a robbery which occurred a short distance from where he operates his business.
Proprietor of GA Shortt Imports and General Store, George Shortt of Lot 49 High Street, Werk-en-rust, was shot during the incident which occurred around 1.30 pm.
He was rushed to the Accident and Emergency Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital and subsequently taken to the operating theatre to undergo surgery.
According to reports, Shortt was at his business premises when he observed an individual being robbed by two men. He instantly went into his office and retrieved his licensed firearm, but as he was approaching the front of the premises one of the bandits opened fire. Two bullets hit him to his left leg.
The men escaped by running north along High Street and up to last night they had not been captured.
However, a police source informed Stabroek News that investigators recovered spent shells at the scene and were in the process of reviewing CCTV footage in the hope of capturing the suspects.
This newspaper understands that up to last evening, the robbery victim had not reported the matter to the police. An undisclosed amount of money was reportedly stolen.
