GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – Title-holders Barbados will contest the Super50 final of the Regional Women’s Championship against hosts perennial rivals Trinidad and Tobago, despite suffering a washout in their final preliminary game here yesterday.
Not a ball was possible at Enterprise where the Barbadians were scheduled to clash with Leeward Islands, leaving them with two points from the no-result.
However, those points helped Barbados finish second in the standings with 11 points and they scraped into tomorrow’s final courtesy of net run rate as Guyana and Jamaica also finished on 11 points.
Barbados suffered three no-results in the rain-marred tournament.
T&T, meanwhile, topped the standings with 12 points after their game at Enmore against Windward Islands was also abandoned due to rain.
Amazingly, the Trinidadians suffered four no-results but came away with a win in the only game the weather allowed them to complete – ironically against Barbados in the first round.
In the only game possible on Friday, Jamaica trounced hosts Guyana by 43 runs at Everest.
Asked to bat in a contest reduced to 20 overs per side, Jamaica rattled up 125 for eight with Chedean Nation top-scoring with 35 and Rashada Williams getting 25.
Erva Giddings was the best bowler with three for 23 while fellow seamer Akaze Thompson picked up two for 20.
Jamaica were rocking at 23 for three in the fourth over when Nation arrived to anchor two key partnerships and steer them out of trouble.
She struck three fours in an 87-ball knock, adding 35 for the fourth wicket with captain Stafanie Taylor (10) and a further 35 for the fifth wicket with Williams, who struck a four and a six off 30 deliveries.
In reply, Guyana’s innings never got going and they slumped to 33 for three in the seventh over.
Hope remained while West Indies player Shemaine Campbelle remained at the wicket but once she fell for 16 off 15 balls with two fours, the innings declined sharply and never recovered.
Off-spinner Vanessa Watts claimed three for 22 while left-armer Shanel Daley finished with two for 10.
Following tomorrow’s final, teams will turn their attention to the Twenty20 phase, starting next Thursday.
