Romello Crawford emerged winner of yesterday’s 75-mile road race which started outside of the Ocean View Hotel, proceeded to the Abary Bridge and back.
In the third points race of the season that was organized by the Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF), the Trojan/PCL standout led Curtis Dey and Mario King of the Guyana Police Force onto the podium.
Crawford, stopped the clock in three hours, four minutes and 11 seconds for the event which attracted 28 starters. The 19-year old wheelsman from Berbice earned four sprint prizes and a maximum 15 points for his efforts. Dey, his breakaway mate earned 12 points while King racked up 10.
Alonzo Ambrose (eight points) of the Guyana Defense Force and Leer Nunes (six points) placed fourth and fifth respectively in the sunbaked road race.
Dey was the first junior cyclist across the line, leading Nigel Duguid and James Cameron. Leer Nunes, Ian Jackson and Jaikarran Sukhai were the top three veterans to finish. Notes: In an effort to create a transparent system for eligibility for selection to overseas assignments, the GCF has embarked on organizing events where points are awarded to the top wheelsmen. Jamal John had dominated the first two races to rack up 30 points. He did not compete yesterday but his lead is still intact.
