Power brokers of Caribbean boxing will gather here on Sunday at the Guyana Squash Racquet Centre for an all-important meeting to chart the region’s way forward in relation to AIBA’s current crisis.
AIBA’s President Dr. Ching-Kuo Wu of Taiwan and an Interim Management Committee (IMC) established in July, are in a bitter power struggle to see who has the right to govern the amateur sport, the body ultimately in charge of all junior and senior amateur boxing.
Wu, who has been in charge of AIBA for 11 years, is currently accused of financial miss-management and using AIBA for personal gain. It was recently reported that 76 major boxing nations have voiced their support for the IMC.
Among those nations are powerhouses of amateur boxing, France, U.S.A, Germany, Russia and Kazakhstan who are all ready to oust president Wu.
The reginal boxing presidents and administrators are scheduled to meet from 10am to iron out the issues.
According to President of the Guyana Boxing Association, (GBA), Steve Ninvalle, executives from the boards of Jamaica, Trinidad, Barbados, St. Lucia, St Martin, Antigua, Anguilla, Suriname and the Bahamas have confirmed that they will be attending Sunday’s meeting.
In addition, high ranking officials from AIBA, the Americas Boxing Confederation and some members of the Interim Management Committee formed to run the affairs of AIBA, will be attending the meeting to brief Caribbean administrators.
The meeting was organized by Ninvalle who is an AIBA Executive Committee Member, shortly after he returned from an Executive Meeting in Moscow, in July. (Emmerson Campbell)
