An 18-year-old miner was shot on Sunday evening when armed bandits invaded a mining camp at Five Star, North West District.
Troy Joseph, of Falls Top, North West District, was shot once to his left foot. Up to yesterday afternoon, he was a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH), where condition was listed as stable.
Public Relations Officer of the Guyana Police Force Jairam Ramlakhan confirmed the shooting, which occurred around 2pm on Sunday.
The police said that two of the suspects spoke fluent English, whilst the others spoke a foreign language.
It is unclear whether the bandits escaped with any valuables, although Joseph was said to have been relieved of a gold chain. Joseph was one of several people who were present at the camp.
While details surrounding the attack remain sketchy, Stabroek News was told that Joseph was shot after he attempted to escape from the bandits, who had relieved him of the chain. A Joint Services team was dispatched to the area on Monday to investigate. As of late yesterday afternoon, no arrest had been made.
In July, three Guyanese miners were shot dead while three others were injured after their camp at Imataka, on the Venezuelan side of the border, was raided by Spanish-speaking gunmen.
