Leon Seaton won a whopping 13 races at the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) annual national short course championships last weekend at the National Aquatic Centre, Lilliendaal.
Seaton, of the Silver Sharks Swim Club, competing in the boys 11-12 age group, Seaton won all of his events.
Seaton’s victories came in the 50m and 100m freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly events. He also swam the 200m individual medley and the 400m and 800m freestyle events.
Swimming in the boys’ eight-years-and-under (the youngest category in the competition) Jeremy Sookram, of the Dolphin Swim Club, was unbeaten in all six races he contested winning the 50m freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly events and also the 100m freestyle and the individual medley.
The three-day event, which started Friday morning and ended Sunday evening, saw swimmers from all the local clubs competing in a series of races across several age categories.
Outstanding performances also came from Orca Swim Club’s Aleka Persaud and Dorado Speed Club’s Lian Winter and Daniel Scott.
Persaud made light of the nine events she competed in, easily winning all the races in her age category.
She contested the 50and 100m freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly events and the 200m IM and 400m freestyle race.
Winter won the nine races she contested in the girls’ 11-12 category. She was successful in the 50m and 100m freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly events as well as the 200m IM race.
Paul Mahaica pretty much had the same success as Persaud with the one exception being that he did compete in the 400m freestyle race.
Unlike the boys eight years and under and both girls’ and boys’ 9-10 and 11-12 categories, the other age categories saw different swimmers winning different races.
The girls eight years and under category saw changes in winners as Kyra Soares of Dorado Speed Swim and Andica Vieira of Dolphin Swim Club won two races each and Shareefa Lewis of the Swim Academy Sea Otters Club came out with a win.
Soares won the 50m backstroke and breaststroke, Vieira won the 50 and 100m freestyle and Lewis the 100m IM.
The girls’ 13-14 age group, saw Donna Carter of Dorado winning
six races, two more than Silver Shark’s Sofia Pinol.
Also claiming two victories was Pinol’s club mate Latisha Blair.
Carter won the 50m freestyle, backstroke, butterfly, 100m backstroke, 200m backstroke and individual medley while Pinol won the 50m breaststroke, 100 freestyle, breaststroke, 200m and 400m freestyle. Blair’s two wins were in the 100m butterfly and 800m freestyle.
The boys’ 13-14 category saw many different winners as Sion Jeffers won five events, Joseph Matthews won four, Sekhel Tzedeq won three and Jonathan Sookram won two. Jeffers won the 50m freestyle, breaststroke, butterfly and 100m freestyle and breaststroke events while Silver Sharks’ Joseph Matthews won the 100m butterfly, 200m IM and the 400m and 800m freestyle races. Dolphin’s Sekhel Tzedeq scored three wins in the 50m backstroke and 100m and 200m backstroke events while teammate Sookram, was victorious in the 200m and 1500m freestyle races.
The girls’ 15-17 saw club mates Kenita Mahaica and Nikita Fiedtkou sharing the victories with Mahaica winning the 50m breaststroke, backstroke, butterfly and the 100m breaststroke events and Fiedtkou the 50m and 200m freestyle races.
There were also different winners in the boys’ 15-17 category as Daniel Scott, Antonio Rodrigues, Alex Winter and Andrew Jordan all recorded wins. Scott of Dorado won the 50m butterfly and breaststroke, the 100m freestyle and butterfly, the 200m freestyle and butterfly and the IM.
Rodrigues of Silver Sharks win the 50m backstroke, freestyle and 400m freestyle. Winter won the 200m breaststroke for Dorado and Jordan of Dolphin won the 100m breaststroke.
In the 18 years and over category, Andrew Fowler of Dolphin won four races, Joseph Sequina won two for Sea Otters while Dwayne Andrews of Dolphin, Jamaal Sobers and Trumaine Cole of Orca and Noel Culpeper won one race each. Dolphin’s Fowler won the 50m, 100m and 200m freestyle events and the 50m butterfly while Sequina won the 100m butterfly and 200m IM. Andrews won the 50m breaststroke, Sobers won the 100m backstroke, Cole the 50 backstroke and Culpeper the 1500m freestyle.
The only race in the female 18 years and over category, the 50m freestyle, was won by Asanti Mickle.
