A fire of unknown origin, yesterday destroyed a wooden and concrete, two-story house at Tain Village, Corentyne, Berbice, which housed five persons.
According to the police, the fire started in the upper flat of the two-story structure at 3.15pm yesterday. Thirty six-year-old Jagdeo Ramotar, a cook by profession, his wife and his three children who occupy the home were sitting at the bottom flat of the house when they noticed smoke coming from the upper flat of the house. They immediately exited the house and took refuge at a next-door neighbour.
The building is owned by a family friend, Venkat Kallimootoo, who lives overseas.
By this time, the Fire Service was alerted and fire tender # 78 from Rose Hall Town fire station arrived on the scene. The firefighters went into action and extinguished the fire, the police added.
It was mentioned by the police that the building was not insured and was connected to the GPL grid. Investigations into the fire are ongoing.
